Practice Areas
Divorce
Divorce is a trying experience for spouses and children alike. Our goal is to guide you through this process so that you will emerge from your divorce as emotionally and financially intact as possible. We encourage settlement as an alternative to trial. If settlement is not a viable alternative in your case, we will work with you to prepare your case for trial and aggressively advocate for you at the courthouse.
Child Custody and Visitation
It should be no surprise that child custody is often the most contentious part of the divorce process. Parents must face the reality that the time spent with their children will usually be reduced as a result of their divorce. While joint conservatorship is the general rule in Texas, we will work with you to ensure that the best interest of your children will be served in your case. We will explain the different options available under Texas law and work to help you make the best possible decision for your children.
Alimony
Texas law provides for a form of limited alimony, called spousal maintenance. A new version of the alimony statute contains a “stair step” formula for determining how much spousal maintenance is available. We can help you determine if you qualify for spousal maintenance, and if so, how much you might be entitled to receive.
Complex Property Division
Family law is often recognized as one of the most complicated practice areas due to the many different types of property owned by spouses. We work with professionals in real estate appraisal, business valuation, and retirement valuation, to assist you with locating, identifying, and valuing property. We also look for creative ways to divide property depending on your plan for your post-divorce life and lifestyle.
Post-Divorce Modification
In life, circumstances often change. When these changes affect you and your children, it may be appropriate to modify the provisions of your divorce decree or other existing order. We can assist you with modification proceedings, including modification of conservatorship, possession, and child support provisions.
Child Support Enforcement
Unfortunately, parents do not always follow court orders regarding payment of their child support obligation. If your child’s mother or father is not paying child support as ordered, we can help you collect the money you are owed. In most situations, the court will also order that the other parent must reimburse you for the attorneys’ fees you incurred in pursuing the unpaid child support.
Adoption
Adoption is often a tremendous blessing for parents and children. We assist clients with the adoption process and coordinate with the necessary state and private agencies that facilitate the adoption process. Whether you are involved with a standard adoption or a step-parent adoption, we can help.
Paternity
Technology has revolutionized the field of DNA gathering and evaluation. This technology provides certainty for mothers and fathers alike in paternity suits. Whether you are a mother or a potential father, we can help you obtain appropriate relief in your paternity case. If paternity is established, we will also help you obtain possession and support orders that are in your child’s best interest.
Name Change
Adults and children are eligible to have their names changed under certain circumstances. If you qualify, we can assist you with this straightforward and relatively simple process.
